Maarten Devoldere has always crafted elegant pop with a taste for playing with fire. On The Donkey, he pushes it towards something rawer: exposed vocals, hypnotic lyrics, gqom rhythms and grime-laced grooves. Warhaus is the solo alter ego of Maarten Devoldere, singer and songwriter of Belgian band Balthazar. Since 2016, he has crafted nocturnal, sensual pop around his unmistakable deep voice. Somewhere between Leonard Cohen’s dark romanticism, Serge Gainsbourg’s poisonous elegance and Tom Waits’ raw edge, his world is as refined as it is instinctive. Five albums in, Warhaus continues to blur the line between seduction, melancholy and fever.
